On the 6th of June 2023, the great Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine was “blown up”. There was great flooding and “mass destruction”. Hundreds and thousands are now at risk because of it. It provides water to the Crimea, the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant which is important to Ukraine.
It happened in the early hours of that Tuesday morning in southern Ukraine . The local Russian mayor said it was a “ terrorist attack “ whereas Ukraine’s southern military command says it was “blown up” by the Russians. The BBC has quoted Mykola Kalinin, chief engineer at a hydropower and water management engineering company in Ukraine, Ukrhydroproject, who claimed that an explosion was the cause.
The same BBC article references the Kremlin who claim that the damage was an act of ‘sabotage’ to deprive the Crimea of water – an area annexed by Russia in 2014.
The destruction of it will cause future problems for Ukraine’s existent energy problems due to the war. This will most likely impact the people of Ukraine deeply.
How do you feel about this growing problem?
